chris matthews picks things up right now. >>> the war on chuck hagel. let's play "hardball." ♪ >>> good evening. i'm chris matthews in washington. let me start tonight with this. the breaking news. senate republicans have successfully blocked a vote on chuck hagel. republicans have thrown out so many different reasons for this it's hard to know why they're opposing the man becoming secretary of defense. it's hard to keep up with all their arguments. it's because hagel hasn't accounted for every penny he's made and every single word of every single speech he's ever given. it's because of what he said about israel and iran, maybe, but it's also because of the white house's response to benghazi, perhaps, something obviously, but that was nothing to do with chuck hagel who wasn't in the government at that time. well, today republican threats to take the unprecedented step of blocking a presidential cabinet appointment came to fruition, if you will. democrats moved forward with a procedural vote to end debate and pave the way for a final up and down vote.

i'm chris matthews in washington. let me start with this. is what the president started today an all-out challenge to the republicans to stop these crazy manufactured crises we've been having? every few months now we've got another deadline, another abyss, another coming government shutdown. this brinksmanship has become elemental to american politics. republicans now threat ton bring government down to a crashing halt regularly. democrats have to plead with them, practically beg them not to do it. well, this torpedo politics if you you want to call that that, started with newt gingrich in the '90s he was the first right wing radical saying making government work isn't our job, bringing it down is is. destroy it, get people to lose faith in it. lose faith in the ability of the country to do something right. today president obama warned of the casualties, a weakened national defense, the huge loss of jobs, and with it a crippling of the recovery. by the way, with that ax ready to fall, he offered a way out of the endless government shutdowns
